The world's top 10 luxurious spa experiences for 2015

1. Royal Malewane, Kruger National Park, South Africa
Smart, sophisticated with all the thrills of banging about in the bush.

The eight colonial rooms are outrageously extravagant (antiques, canopies, king-sized beds, Victorian baths) and the food is incredible.

Singer Elton John even had the wholemeal bread flown home to him after his idyllic stay in this hidden gem deep in the Kruger National Park.

Amid all the splendour is one of the most stylish spas in on this vast continent. African rituals restore your equilibrium; hydrotherapy treatments use the mineral-rich waters from an underground stream and the local healers offer powerfully holistic and recharging therapies.

This really is the big cat’s whiskers of a spa!

Science Proves the Healing Power of Prayer

For the devout, there never has been any question that prayer has the power to heal.

Now, more and more medical research from leading hospitals and universities across the U.S. has shown conclusively a belief in God really IS good for you, making you healthier and happier, and helping you live longer.

“Studies have shown prayer can prevent people from getting sick — and when they do get sick, prayer can help them get better faster,” Duke University’s Harold G. Koenig, M.D., tells Newsmax Health.

An exhaustive analysis of more than 1,500 reputable medical studies “indicates people who are more religious and pray more have better mental and physical health,” Dr. Koenig says.“And out of 125 studies that looked at the link between health and regular worship, 85 showed regular churchgoers live longer.

“There’s a lot of evidence out there.”

The Healing Values Of Soursop

Botanical name: Annona muricata
Family: annonaceae (annona family)
Common names: Soursop, Graviola, Brazilianawpaw, Prickly custard apple, etc.

Description
Soursop is believed to be indigenous to most of the warmest tropical regions of the world.
It is a small upright evergreen tree that grows up to 6 metres tall.
It has large dark and shiny green and leathery leaves, which has a pungent odour when crushed.

The flowers are large, with yellow or greenish-yellow colour.
The fruit of the tree (soursop) is large and has a heart-like shape, covered with small spine-shaped structures.

The pulp is fleshy, soft and white in colour, with a slightly sour-acid taste and it can be eaten out-of-hand. The fruit may contain up to 100 black seeds.
In most tropical regions of the world, where the plant grows, it is often referred as a miracle tree.

Protein that promotes healing inhibits it in diabetic patients, study shows

A protein that helps wounds heal actively inhibits this process when blood sugar levels are high, according to research that could explain a 'previously unrecognised' mechanism for delayed healing in patients with diabetes.

In animal-model studies, University of Pennsylvania researchers found that the forkhead box O1 (FOXO1) protein – which normally helps trigger the healing process – promotes expression of two genes that inhibit the migration of skin cells to wound sites when exposed to high-glucose conditions.
This could explain why simple wounds in diabetes patients do not close up as quickly as in non-diabetics, and suggests that treatments to inhibit FOXO1 could be a beneficial therapeutic option for diabetes patients in the future.
Because wounds take longer to heal in diabetics, it is easier for bacteria to take hold and cause chronic infection, which can lead to diabetic ulcers and – in extreme cases – require amputation.

Today's treatments for depression and anxiety leave much to be desired. Pharmaceuticals may help the symptoms, but they can also have negative side effects like weight gain and decreased sexual desire that may cause people to abandon medication altogether. As cases of depression and anxiety increase throughout the world, research is being conducted to find more sustainable and accessible treatments.
"Despite modern advances in psychopharmacology, and the development of so many integrative forms of psychotherapy, we haven't made a significant dent in this epidemic of emotional illness," says clinical psychologist and yoga teacher Bo Forbes.

Male circumcision reduces HIV spread until wounds heal

While circumcision reduces the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission by infected men, there is actually a possible increased risk of infecting female sexual partners while the circumcision wounds heal, warns a new study.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends male circumcision (the surgical removal of foreskin from the penis) which reduces HIV acquisition by 50-60 percent.

"There is a window of a few weeks after circumcision when the risk that an HIV-infected man could transmit the virus to a female partner actually increases," said the study's first author Aaron Tobian, associate professor of pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Mysterious Healing Springs Worth Visiting in Africa

Many African sites hold mystic stories which draw curious travellers to them - some ancestral sites and spooky vibes they give off attract many adventure-seeking tourists to have a feel of the experience.  4 of Africa’s springs to make your vacation even more memorable than you bargained for!

Ikogosi Springs, Nigeria
Ikogosi Warm Spring’s mystery lies in its therapeutic effect on ailment and aches of many forms. It flows beside a cold spring which even adds to the air of mystery it evokes. Experts call it a “geological wonder”, many call it a “healing spring, it is indeed one of a kind.
Common folklore about the existence of the Ikogosi springs from a tale of a man and his two wives; the warm spring depicts one of the wives - the rather troublesome one while the cold spring depicts the other, the more easy-going one.
Many believe in the healing properties of the Ikogosi Springs as visitors come from far and wide to fetch some of this water for future use. 6 Natural Ways To Cure Brain Hemorrhage

Brain Hemorrhage or commonly known as cerebral hemorrhage is a critical medical condition which is mostly solved by surgical methods and other western medical facilities. A brain hemorrhage, also called a stroke occurred when any of the arteries in the brain gets blocked which subsequently resulted in bursting and bleeding in the surrounding areas. Bleeding in the brain can kill brain cells and it may be resulted in the death of a person. Brain Hemorrhage can be caused by high blood pressure, diabetes, clots, smoking or tumor in any parts of the brain. Brain Hemorrhage can leave the patient partially paralyzed. Research says the traditional medicines can be very helpful in treating Brain Hemorrhage. Some natural remedies prepared at home and available from nature can slow down the bleeding and minimize the pain after a stroke.

The healing gel made with your own blood: Substance contains platelets important for clotting

A gel made from patients' own blood could help heal burns more quickly - and stop wounds getting worse.
The gel contains platelet-rich plasma (PRP) - a concentrated mix of substances in the blood that play a role in healing. It is made by taking a small amount of blood from a patient's arm (amounts vary depending on wound size, but typically no more than a couple of tablespoons) and then processing it in a machine that spins the blood at high speed until it separates into its various components.
Blood is largely made up of a clear yellowish liquid, called plasma, but it also contains small, solid compounds - red cells, white cells and platelets. The platelets are important for clotting, but they also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors that are important for healing.

Therapists Using Mirrors To Help Heal Stroke Victims

Therapists are using mirrors to help stroke victims get back use of damaged limbs.
The brain can be tricked to use other ways to move damaged limbs, according to Laura Lee Smith, certified hand therapist at Bacharach Institute in Pamona.
She explains that with graded motor imagery, a stroke patient visualized using his damaged left hand, then his good right hand moved in front of a mirror. The brain saw two hands in motion and then the brain takes over.
“When I put him in front of the mirror, he couldn’t believe it when he started moving his left hand and he progressed from there and got full sensation.” said Smith. “He’s eating and he’s starting to write again with his left hand, he’s driving with both hands.”
The therapy was first used for patients in pain after amputations.

Feeling grateful may improve health for heart failure patients

Gratitude was linked to better sleep and mood, as well as lower levels of inflammation in people coping with heart failure in a California study.
Lead author Paul Mills said in an email that previous studies have focused on the benefits of spirituality in general, and have tied it to a better quality of life and better physical health.
Mills, who works in the departments of public health and psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, decided to narrow this focus. He and his research team were inspired by the link between gratitude and the heart in language, such as the expression “a grateful heart,” he told Reuters Health.
“We wanted to examine gratitude in a population that has been challenged in terms of their cardiac health,” said Mills, who is also affiliated with the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California.

DEFEATING ANGER

What Is Anger?

Anger is a feeling of irritation or offense that arises when we don’t like something that is taking place. It occurs in different degrees of intensity – from mild irritation, to violent rage. Sometimes we can hold it, and other times we just let go. It may last a short time or it may continue on as a deep-seated bitterness and resentment.

Anger, itself, is not necessarily bad. It can be either destructive or constructive, depending on how it is used. However, all too often we see it expressed destructively.

The Bible reveals that anger is also a part of God’s nature. Since He is perfect, we need to see how He uses anger. We can then establish this as a goal toward which we can work.

God’s Anger

The Bible justifies the anger of God, yet warns against human anger. There is a good reason for this. God is perfect and holy, and therefore His anger is just and constructive. Let’s examine the nature of God’s anger:

1.     He has understanding – “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Rom. 11:33).

2.     His anger is directed at sin – “God is angry with the wicked every day” (Psalms 7:11).

3.     His justice is fair – “But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth” (Rom. 2:2).

4.     His anger is patient and controlled – God is “slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness ‘ (Psalms 86:15, NIV).

5.     He wants the transgressor restored – “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (II Pet. 3:9, NIV).

7 Steps To Heal From Repressed Anger

Identify the area of your life or relationship where the anger comes up most.

Step 1: What happened.

Dive into your memory. Write about the situation when you were hurt, violated, betrayed, ignored, cheated, disrespected,  left out, judged, unappreciated…. It might have been a situation that didn’t come to closure, and now it’s too late.

Step 2: Who did it.

Who was involved. How did they do it. When you finish- take a moment, don’t rush to the next step… write some more bad things this person did. I’m sure you will find something.

10 Ways to Heal Hay Fever Naturally

Hay Fever affects the mucous membranes of the sinuses, nose, throat, eyes and palate.  Grasses and plant pollens can cause inflammatory reactions and release of histamine that weakens the immune system leaving us feeling dreadful.
Naturally treating any illness or health concern does take time but it is worth it in the end and much less stressful on our bodies.  Children are growing every day and so are their little organs so if you give them regular inhalers, calpol, piriton etc then their liver will get overloaded and cause many different health concerns, not to mention the damage this does to their tummies (knocking out the healthy gut bacteria).

HOW TO BEAT EYE PROBLEMS: Eat these foods to boost your eyes.

There is little doubt that good diet plays a key role in eye health. Here, Sian Porter, a consultant dietitian, identifies the most important foods to include in your diet, and offers some idemas about you how to incorporate them with an appetising seven-day meal plan.

LEAFY GREENS
When it comes to your eyes, there’s no getting away from it: you have to eat up your greens.
That’s because they are rich in lutein, a nutrient important for eye health, found in the lens and retina. It’s thought it helps absorb damaging blue and ultraviolet light.
Kale is the richest source of lutein, containing 11.4 g per 100 g. Though other foods such as oranges and eggs contain lutein, you would have to eat 41 oranges and 71 eggs to get the same amount of lutein as in one 80 g portion of kale.
Spinach is another excellent source, with 7.9 mg of lutein per 100 g.
Aim for 10 mg of lutein a day — a one portion of kale a day is enough. Slightly steam kale or spinach or eat spinach raw in salads.

11 things you need to know about waist training before you jump on the celebrity corset-wearing bandwagon

Ever since Kim Kardashian was seen wearing a corset showing off her tiny waist on Instagram, it has been the latest “fitness” craze everyone’s taking about.
Waist-shaping corsets aren’t new – in fact, tightlacing (also known as corset training) was quite common in the late Victorian era and came into existence in around 16th century.
But last year when TV royalty Kim K was seen wearing a modern-day latex version to shape her post-baby waist, we wanted to know more.
Soon other celebs like sisters Kourtney and Kim, Jersey Shore’s J-Woww and Snooki, Luisa Zissman and Danielle Lloyd were posting pictures of their tightly-cinched waists to kickstart this latest body-shaping movement and we took notice.

6 Foods To Eat If You Have A Stomach Ache

Everyone experiences a debilitating stomach ache at one point or another. Whether you’re nauseous from last night’s outing, you have a stomach bug, or just ate something funky, stomach pains can be a real pain in the butt. Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic pill to pop to make the pain go away, but you can put certain things in your stomach to help ease your aches.

Injecting fat into the knees 'eases osteoarthritis symptoms'

Injecting stomach fat into the knees of osteoarthritis sufferers reduced symptoms by 75pc in two thirds of cases, human trials have shown.
Improvements of up to 75 per cent were found in the condition of almost two thirds of patients who underwent the novel treatment, the latest research shows.
Osteoarthritis, a debilitating and painful degenerative disease, strikes an estimated 14 percent of adults 25-years-old and above, one third of adults aged 65 and older in the U.S.
Those who suffer from osteoarthritis have been given hope of an effective new cell therapy, thanks to a team of Czech researchers who studied the effectiveness of using a sufferer's own adipose (fat) cells in a unique transplant therapy aimed at reducing the symptoms of the condition.

3 Fertility Treatment Innovations That Might Help Your Chances

Fertility statistics are a little difficult to track as many women or couples may choose to try only the old-fashioned way, and proceed no further.
The most recent statistics indicate that 6.7 million women in the United States between the ages of 15-44 years old have fertility challenges, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC also reports that 7.4 million women ages 15-44 years old have used a fertility service.
Fertility services include everything from meeting with a specialist (gynecologist, endocrinologist or urologist) for an initial screening, to full-blown assisted reproductive technology. The goal for all of this is the same — a healthy baby!

65-year-old mum of 13 expecting quads: German primary school teacher to give birth in weeks after 18 months of fertility treatment

She already has 13 children and is due to retire this year – so you’d think babies would be the last thing on her mind.
But Annegret Raunigk is set to become the oldest woman in the world to have quadruplets – at the age of 65.
The German primary school teacher will give birth in a matter of weeks to four babies, conceived following 18 months of fertility treatment.
Miss Raunigk, who features in a documentary on German television tonight, said she was not too worried about the birth, adding: ‘I feel fit. I don’t think I will have any problems.’
She is in her 21st week of pregnancy after being artificially inseminated, using both donated sperm and eggs. The identity of the babies’ father is unknown.
Speaking of the moment she learned she was carrying quadruplets, she said: ‘Sure, it was a shock for me.
‘Once the physician established that there are four babies inside me then I had to do some thinking.’
Miss Raunigk, who teaches English and Russian, said her gynaecologist mentioned the possibility of an abortion but she decided against this option.
The mother, from Berlin, previously made headlines in Germany after giving birth to her youngest daughter Leila a decade ago, aged 55.
Her 13 children – the eldest of whom is daughter Antje, 44 – are by five different fathers.
Miss Raunigk’s physician, Dr Kai Hertwig, said everything was going well. He added: ‘So far her age has not come into play but quadruplet pregnancies are always a high risk. We are keeping a close watch on her heart circulatory system, but we have little or no experience with a woman of this age.’
Miss Raunigk claimed she had no moral qualms about getting pregnant later in life, saying: ‘I think one needs to decide for oneself and not listen too much to the opinions of others.’
The record for the oldest woman to give birth to quadruplets is held by Merryl Fudel from the US, who was 55.
The oldest woman ever to have a child was Omkari Panwar, who was believed to be 70 when she gave birth to twins in India.

Taking Probiotics Could Come With A Weird Side Effect

We already know there's a lot to thank our gut bacteria for. But, new research suggests those little friends might be doing even more than we realize, including messing with our moods — and that probiotics can do the same.

For the small study, published online earlier this month in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, 40 healthy participants were randomly assigned to take either probiotics or placebos for four weeks. Participants also had to fill out questionnaires assessing their moods and thought patterns before and after their four-week supplement regimen. For instance, they were asked to rate to what degree they agreed with statements like, "When I feel sad, I more often think about how my life could have been different."

Mental decline 'likely for depressed diabetics'

People with diabetes who are also diagnosed with depression are significantly more likely to experience a decline in their cognitive function as they get older.
This is according to researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, who found that the combination of the two conditions posed a substantial risk to an individual's mental health in later life.
Doctors analysed data relating to almost 2.5 million patients, finding that those with both depression and diabetes were at a greater risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, all-cause dementia or vascular dementia in the future.

1 in 3 women will get bacterial vaginosis but are unlikely to know what it is

One in three women will get bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common cause of unusual vaginal discharge, at some time in their life. However, many women do not know what it is, and can confuse the symptoms for other conditions, such as thrush.
Although the causes of BV are not very well understood, it develops when the normal environment of the vagina changes, when there are less of the normal bacteria (lactobacilli), an overgrowth of other types of bacteria, and the vagina becomes more alkaline.
BV is not a sexually transmitted infection, but it can develop after sex, and any woman might get it including those in same sex relationships and those who have never had sex.
Activities that can put women at increased risk of BV include having sex with a new partner or multiple partners, using medicated or perfumed soaps, using strong detergents to wash your underwear, oral sex, douching (rinsing inside the vagina) or using vaginal deodorant or washes, and smoking.

Fitness apps don't improve health - and could be harmful

They are the latest health and fitness ‘revolution’, beloved of the fad dieters and the pilates obsessives – not to mention some of our leading politicians.
But what use, really, are increasingly popular health apps like Fitbit and Jawbone that monitor our activity levels, heart rate and even sleep patterns? None at all, according to one leading GP – and they could even end up doing harm.
Writing in the BMJ, Glasgow GP and health commentator Dr Des Spence warns that the products, which increasingly include wearable devices that link to computers and smartphones, providing 24-hour health monitoring, are “untested and unscientific” and could ignite “extreme anxiety” in a new generation of the “worried well”.

'Love hormone' oxytocin could be used to treat mental health problems

A hormone known as the “love drug” because of its role in bonding between mother and child – as well as between lovers –  has been shown to permanently alter the nerve pathways in the brain controlling certain social behaviour.
Studies on laboratory mice have found that oxytocin changes the behaviour of virgin females so that they are able to recognise and respond to the distress calls of baby mice despite never having given birth.
Scientists have shown oxytocin, a hormone that is also produced by women during childbirth and breastfeeding, irrevocably changes the why nerve cells communicate in the auditory cortex of the left side of the mouse’s brain. This area is responsible for processing the barely-audible distress sounds made by baby mice when separated from their mother.

Encapsulated stem cells accelerate wound healing

A team of Cornell scientists has shown that stem cells confined inside tiny capsules secrete substances that help heal simulated wounds in cell cultures, opening up new ways of delivering these substances to locations in the body where they can hasten healing.
The capsules need to be tested to see if they help healing in animals and humans, but they could eventually lead to “living bandage” technologies: wound dressings embedded with capsules of stem cells to help the wound regenerate.
“Microencapsulated equine mesenchymal stromal cells promote cutaneous wound healing in vitro” appeared in the April 10 Stem Cell Research & Therapy.

5 Steps to Heal A Broken Heart

Life can throw many challenges our way and in my experience, there are very few that are as trying and agonizing as mending a broken heart. Be it the drawn out, painful end to a long term relationship or the abrupt collapse of a relationship that was just getting off the ground, the aftermath leaves you hurting in places you didn’t even know could feel pain.
I’ve been there, you’ve probably been there, and no matter how many times you go through it, it doesn’t get easier.
We’ve covered a bevy of relationship topics on ANM over the years, but we haven’t really gone into the nitty gritty of how to heal a broken heart. It is a very important step in the finding-love equation….the sooner you can put yourself back together, the sooner you can move on and find the right relationship.

Prayer for Healing

Father, I come boldly before Your throne to obtain grace to help in time of need. I have confidence in Your Word, and I take hold of Your promises to heal me. According to Isaiah 53:5 and I Peter 2:24, I resist sickness and disease. I speak with my mouth and believe in my heart that I am healed of all sickness and disease.
Your Word says that Jesus bore all my sickness and diseases, and He carried my sorrows, so I receive healing now. I know and declare that Jesus is my Healer. I give You all the praise for providing everything I need to walk in wholeness.
Thank You for satisfying me with long life. Father, I am thankful that You are no respecter of persons. What You do for one, You will do for all who ask and believe by faith.
Satan, I declare to you in the Name of Jesus that you have no authority over me. According to Matthew 18:18, I bind you from operating against me in any way. My life is hidden in Christ. You have no power to bring any part of the curse upon me. I take my stand as one who is redeemed from the curse. So you must flee now! I take my place in God and I resist you.
Now Father, I worship You. I give You reverence. I confess with my mouth that Your Word will not return to You void. I praise You for Your protection and for Your goodness upon my life. I thank You that Satan is unable to penetrate that. Thank You for bringing total healing to me. Your Word says whatever I ask in the Name of Jesus will be done for me. So I declare this is done. My healing is complete. Amen.

Thanks to Kenneth Copeland Blog for this prayer.

Healing Trauma

There are many ways in which you can become traumatised  especially in childhood. Trauma is caused by events that destroy your sense of security, your trust in everyone around you and even threaten your life.
The more fear there is involved, the more intense the trauma is likely to be. It can be caused by a one-time event like a car crash, a natural disaster or a violent attack. Sexual abuse is almost always intensely traumatic.
Trauma can also come from being in an ongoing, highly stressful situation, such as living with an abusive dysfunctional family or in a crime-ridden area. Fighting a diagnosis of cancer or similar serious illness is very stressful. The sudden death of a loved one is often traumatic, too.

5 Herbs for Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease—and the cost of allopathic remedies is on the rise. Here are 5 herbs to help you and your loved ones support Alzheimer’s health plans.

Lemon balm

The 16th century Swiss physician, Paracelsus, sold lemon balm to kings with the promise of inhibiting early senility. The herb continues to draw attention in modern-day laboratories for its potential to help Alzheimer’s patients. Professor Elaine Perry of the University of Newcastle tested the effect of balm on the enzyme and receptors responsible for helping the molecule acetylcholine transmit nerve signals. Although more research is necessary, lemon Balm extract stimulated the receptors successfully.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses a special chamber, sometimes called a pressure chamber, to increase the amount of oxygen in the blood.
Some, but not very many, hospitals have a hyperbaric chamber. Smaller units may be available in outpatient center.
The air pressure inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is about two and a half times greater than the normal pressure in the atmosphere. This helps your blood carry more oxygen to organs and tissues in your body.
Hyperbaric therapy can help wounds, especially infected wounds, heal more quickly. The therapy may be used to treat:
  • Air or gas embolism
  • Bone infections (osteomyelitis) that have not improved with other treatments
  • Burns
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Certain types of brain or sinus infections
  • Decompression sickness (for example, a diving injury)
  • Gas gangrene
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Provide enough oxygen to the lung during a procedure called whole lung lavage, which is used to clean an entire lung in patients with certain medical conditions
  • Radiation injury (for example, damage from radiation therapy for cancer)
  • Skin grafts
  • Wounds that have not healed with other treatments (for example, it may be used to treat a foot ulcer in someone with diabetes or very bad circulation)
Treatments for chronic conditions may be repeated over days or weeks. A treatment session for more acute conditions such as decompression sickness may be longer but not necessarily repeated. You might feel pressure in your ears while you are in the hyperbaric chamber. Your ears may pop when you get out of the chamber.
